OVERNIGHT COUNSELEADER
(June 2nd-July 26th)
The month of June starts with training followed by 2 weeks of 5 night camps with adults with a range of special needs. In these weeks, you assist counselors as they work with a ratio of 1 counselor to 2 or 3 campers. You will work with about 12 overnight counselors to facilitate these camps. The rest of the summer includes 4 weeks of 5 night camps with children ages 6-16. In these weeks, you assist about 16 counselors working with a ratio of 1 counselor to 5 or 6 typically developing campers.
CounseLeaders have experience and a desire to work with children and teens, as well as adults with special needs in an outdoor setting. They are able to support and serve both staff and campers while at camp.
CounseLeaders help lead the counseling staff in serving our campers. They serve as mentors, delegators, leaders, and advocates for both campers and staff.
CounseLeaders are intrinsically motivated and eager to step out of their comfort zone. They are adaptable and have a desire to learn. They are excellent community builders and communicators. They set the bar for their peers with their energy, creativity, empathy and compassion.
CounseLeaders will:
Participate in CounseLeader training and possibly Lifeguard training and help lead our staff trainings and weekly meetings
Work closely with the Overnight camp director and Assistant Director, and coordinate with the Day Camp Director and Food Service Director throughout the week
Be mindful of health and safety in program planning and maintain high standards for staff and campers’ wellbeing and safety.
Make announcements at all meals, calling campers, communicating with the Kitchen Leader and ensuring serving and clean-up go smoothly.
Work with counselors who need help with campers who need social and emotional support throughout the day and during listening hours.
Ensure that staff are prepared in all ways for leading their groups and activities.
Lead the way for overnight camp staff through direct communication with staff and Directors, having hard conversations and direct feedback.
Lead or assist camp activities including the Gathering, campfires, archery, catch and release fishing, boating, farm, garden, sports, games and free play at the zone.
Plan, prepare and lead all camp events (ACE) each week.
Assist Health and Wellness Staff before breakfast and at bedtime, if needed.
CounseLeaders work from Sunday at 9:30am until Friday 5pm. Lodging is in a staff building and not with campers. Saturdays are almost always off. Compensation is a weekly stipend, in addition to food and lodging.
