FAQs

how DO we approach & support your health & wellness at camp?

What happens when I am sick at camp?

If you get sick during camp you will need to let someone on our health and wellness team know. We will talk with you about your symptoms and discuss a plan moving forward. If it is beyond the care we can provide we will help you find a doctor and/or urgent care office to go to for help. We can also schedule a tele-health appointment with our camp doctor, Emily Soni.

Do we get any sick days?

If necessary a staff member can have one day per month for time off due to illness, appointments and/or mental health. If you need more we will need to reduce your pay for the additional days, in fairness to other staff working.

What if I need to go to the doctor while at camp?

If you need to go to the doctors during camp please speak with the Health and Wellness Director so that we can coordinate the timing details so that it works with your camp schedule. We can provide transportation if needed. You will be responsible for payment if it not a Workers Compensation situation.

Am I responsible for my own medications at camp?

You are responsible for bringing your medications to camp. When campers are on site the health and wellness team will keep your medications locked up in a safe place. We will bring them to you when you take them. If you have an epi pen, inhaler, or other emergency medication you can keep that with you in your backpack. We will return your medications to you on Friday at the staff meeting as you are responsible for your medications from Friday at 5pm- Sunday at 10am.

What happens if I need to fill and/or pick up a prescription at camp?

There are pharmacies near camp that can help with filling your prescriptions. You will need to communicate with the doctor prescribing your medications to make sure they know where to send it. We can help provide transportation to pick up your medications if needed. Staff are responsible for paying for their medications and being present to pick them up from the pharmacy.

Closest Pharmacy- Rite Aid: 860 N Van Dyke Rd, Almont, MI 48003 Phone: (810) 798-8501

How do I share my health information?

We have a health form that all staff are required to fill out before you arrive at camp. This allows us to know how to support you and your health from the moment you arrive. A member of the health and wellness team will meet with you one-on-one during the first few days of staff training to ensure we are all on the same page.

Who reads my health form?

Our health and wellness team and directors. We do not share personal health information with anyone outside of that.

Who do I go to if I am experiencing a mental health challenge?

If you are experiencing a mental health challenge please let a member of the Health and Wellness team know, or a Director. It is okay to not be okay. We are here to provide support by connecting you to helpful resources and helping to work through work-related problems.

What support do you offer staff in taking care of their mental health?
We are here to listen, we are able to help you figure out what accommodations can be made to help in the workplace, and we can connect you with a mental health professional for additional support.

Our Directors who are trained in Mental Health First Aid:

Erin Stokes- Adult, Youth, & Teen Mental Health First Aid

Rob Hoell- Youth Mental Health First Aid

Matt Henry- Teen Mental Health First Aid

Am I responsible for taking care of the camper's health?

You are here to help the health and wellness team support camper health. Your role is primarily in supervision and prevention. Each counselor will receive some training in caring for our campers’ health and be given a first aid kit with bandaids for minor injuries. All treatments given must be documented and shared with the health and wellness team. For major injuries you are responsible for calling the health and wellness team on a walkie talkie to get additional help.

Am I able to make time for therapy appointments in the summer?

Yes, you are. If you are already seeing a therapist or you want to start, we make space for this during camp. We know the job is hard and know that taking care of your mental health makes you able to do the work. We offer an additional resource of things to consider with your therapist, or yourself, to help you prepare mentally for the summer ahead.

What is Workers’ Compensation Insurance (WCI) and when does it apply?

Skyline provides WCI for staff that are injured on the job.  “On the job” is defined as any time that a staff member has been assigned to work.  Time off and weekends are NOT covered under this insurance. If an injury occurs while working, an accident form must be filled out and given to the Director within 24 hours. If the report is not filled out and reported immediately, the staff member increases the possibility the claim will not be honored. When the injury occurs, the staff member must seek treatment immediately by the Health and Wellness Team.

More information can be found in our staff manual about WCI.

If I am an international counselor, how do I get insurance?
If your injury or illness is determined not to be WCI-covered you will be responsible for the payment and/or submitting a claim to your personal insurance company.

Workers’ Compensation Insurance-WCI still applies, as above, and additionally you will work with the organization you are coming through to get insurance for illnesses/injuries that are not considered WCI-covered.
