OVERNIGHT COUNSELEADER

(AGES 20+)

(May 28-August 9)

  • The month of June starts with training followed by 2 weeks of 5 night camps with teens and adults with a range of special needs. In these weeks, you assist counselors as they work with a ratio of 1 counselor to 2 or 3 campers. You will work with about 14 overnight counselors to facilitate these camps. The rest of the summer includes 3 days of additional training followed by 5 weeks of 5 night camps with children ages 6-16. In these weeks, you assist about 18 counselors working with a ratio of 1 counselor to 5 or 6 typically developing campers.  

  1. A CounseLeader has experience and a desire to work with children and teens, as well as teens and adults with special needs in an outdoor setting. They are able to support and serve both staff and campers while at camp.

  2. CounseLeaders help to lead the counseling staff in serving our campers with a loving embrace. They will serve as a mentor, leader, and advocate for both campers and staff. 

  3. A CounseLeader is kind, smart, and self motivated. They have a desire to learn new things. They can adapt and are flexible with change. They are excellent communicators and community builders, They are energetic, creative, and bring our staff and campers warmth and light. 


CounseLeaders will:

  • Participate in a CounseLeader training and possibly Lifeguard training

  • Work with the Program Director and Overnight camp director including regular meetings throughout the week

  • Help to lead our staff trainings and weekly meetings on Sundays

  • Maintain and be responsible for staff and campers wellbeing and safety

  • Make announcements at all meals and calling campers to be served after communicating with the Kitchen Leader on duty, ensuring serving and clean-up go smoothly. 

  • Work with counselors who need help with campers who need social and emotional support.

  • Ensure that staff are prepared for leading their groups and activities. 

  • Advocate for overnight camp staff needs through open communication with Program Director and Day and Overnight Camp Directors.

  • Lead or assist, as needed, camp activities which include archery, catch and release fishing, boating, farm, garden, sports, games and free play at the zone. 

  • Plan, prepare and lead all camp events (ACE) each week.

  • Clean program equipment and program areas throughout the day

  • Be responsible for keeping themselves healthy and safe, but also mindful of health and safety in program planning and presentation for campers and staff. 

  • Assist Health and Wellness Director before breakfast and at bedtime, if needed. 

CounseLeaders work from Sunday at 9:30am until Friday 5pm. Lodging is in a staff building and not with campers. Saturdays are always off. Compensation is a weekly stipend, in addition to food and lodging.
